Winter isn’t our favourite time of year but if like us you keep playing, we’ve got some tips from our pros to give you an edge through the colder months.
Jacques Blaauw – Challenge Tour
My winter tip is to spend a little more time on your short game. When you play in wet and soft conditions also check that your wedges have more bounce than in the Summer.
I see most amateurs play with the wrong wedges when the course is wet. Ask your pro as a simple change of equipment to suit the conditions can improve your chipping and pitching, knocking 1 or 2 shots off per round and lowering your handicap even in Winter.

Jacques Kruyswijk – DP World Tour
I don’t have that much experience of Winter golf as we follow the sun out on tour! I am playing over in Europe during the summer and back down to SA when it turns cold in Europe
Best advice I could give an amateur would be to always hit one club more than you think, simply because the cold naturally tightens up the body, essentially the swing then gets slower and ball striking gets more difficult. If in doubt hit one more, you will rarely be disappointed!

Whitney Hiller – Ladies European Tour
My best tip for amateur golfers in Winter is to dedicate some time before you play to warming up. Even 10 minutes to stretch and hit a few chips and putts will pay dividends in the early part of a round.
The cold winter conditions create more risk of injuries so to counter this and start your round well arrive a bit earlier at the course and get your body and mind in shape for the challenge ahead.

Jigger Thompson – DP World Tour
I think a very good tip for winter is to make sure that if you want to get better spend time with a local coach and use your local driving range to get your technique better while you have the chance before spring summertime.
With scoring less important and fewer competitions it’s a great time of year to work on your game and effect a particular change that will give you better results, but not enough amateurs do this and then get frustrated that they haven’t improved in the new season.
